Emotional Processing

Emotions influence almost every part of our lives, yet many of us were never taught what they are, how they develop, or how to work with them. This series explores a different way of understanding emotional experience, helping us make greater sense of ourselves, our relationships, and the conversations that matter most.

PART I

Understanding Emotions

Before we can work with our emotions, we first need to understand what they are, why they exist, and how emotional experience develops. These articles introduce the core ideas behind emotional experience, helping explain why we feel the way we do and why understanding our emotions often changes them.

1

ARTICLE 1. Why We Have Emotions: What Feelings Are Trying to Tell Us

This article introduces emotions as an essential part of being human. Rather than seeing emotions as problems to overcome, it explores how they help us recognise what matters, understand our needs, and navigate the world around us.

2

ARTICLE 2. How We Come to Feel the Way We Do: The Process Behind Every Feeling

This article explores how emotional experience develops. Rather than arising directly from events, our feelings grow from the meanings our minds make through memories, expectations, needs, and previous experiences.

3

ARTICLE 3. Why Emotions Need Processing: When Our First Feeling Isn’t the Full Story

This article explains why our first emotional understanding is often only the beginning. As understanding grows, emotions become richer, clearer, and can guide us more effectively.
PART II

Working Through Emotions

Understanding emotions is only the beginning. These practical guides explore how to work with emotional experience—both our own and another person’s. They introduce a different way of responding to emotions by helping us regulate, explore, understand, and move forward together.

PART III

Working Through Difficult Interactions

When two emotional worlds meet, conversations do not always go as we hope. These articles explore why difficult conversations become stuck, how emotional reactions influence one another, and how curiosity, understanding, and repair can help couples find their way back to one another.

Behind the Ideas

The ideas explored in these articles are informed by my clinical experience as a psychotherapist and established psychological research, particularly Emotion-Focused Therapy, emotion science, and Person-Centred Therapy.

If you’d like to explore these ideas in greater depth, these books are a helpful place to start.
